This activity is supported by Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network (NBMPHN), as part of the Australian Government’s response to the 2019/20 bushfires. ACCIDENTAL COUNSELLOR
The Lifeline Accidental Counsellor course equips participants with the essential skills and structure to:
Recognise when a person is in crisis
Respond in an appropriate and compassionate manner, and
Refer the person to a suitable service
Have you ever found yourself supporting a customer, client, friend, family member, colleague or even a stranger who is experiencing distress or a crisis, and you aren’t sure what to say? Our Accidental Counsellor workshop equips participants with the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in these situations.
Learning how to ‘Recognise, Respond and Refer’ helps participants build their confidence to support someone in distress or experiencing a crisis. Participants will learn effective communication skills, ask directly about thoughts of suicide and respond safely, whatever the answer. It defines the role of an “Accidental Counsellor” and includes a self-care module to ensure their own wellbeing.
YAMAYAMARRA ACCIDENTAL COUNSELLOR
The Lifeline Central West Yamayamarra Aboriginal Accidental Counsellor course is designed for anyone who would like to support
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experiencing difficult situations or a crisis by understanding more about their culture and beliefs, and learn to:
Recognise recognising when the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders might be experiencing a crisis
Respond responding in a culturally appropriate and compassionate manner.
Refer referring to an appropriate service.
Have you ever found yourself supporting your mob, a friend, customer, client, colleague or even a stranger who is experiencing distress or a crisis, and you aren’t sure what to say? Our Aboriginal Accidental Counsellor workshop equips participants with the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in these situations.
Learning how to ‘Recognise, Respond and Refer’ helps participants build their confidence to support our First Nations peoples in distress or experiencing a crisis. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and education on our First Nations peoples’ culture and history, as well as Mental Health whilst learning some tips on the following:
1. How to identify someone in distress
2. How to respond to First Nations peoples in crisis through using effective communication skills.
3. How to ask directly around suicide.
4. Importance of self-care.

We offer 5 Mental Health First Aid courses. Note you must be aged 18+ to attend.
8. Standard Mental Health First Aid | 12 hours face-to-face
Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training helps mobilise and empower adults in the workplace and community by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand and respond to another adult experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.
You will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
9. Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid | 14 hours face-to-face
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based action plan.
This course is based on evidence from the expert consensus of Aboriginal mental health professionals, many of whom also have lived experience of mental health problems.
10. Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person | 4 hours face-to-face
AN INTRODUCTION TO MHFA CONVERSATIONS ABOUT SUICIDE
The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Suicide course is for any interested adult.
You will learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to safely have a conversation with a person who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

11. Older Person Mental Health First Aid | 12 hours face-to-face

The 12-hour Older Person Mental Health First Aid course is for any interested adult, particularly those who work with, live with or care for older people, including families and carers.
You will learn how to assist a person aged 65+ who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based action plan.
This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

12. Youth Mental Health First Aid | 14 hours face-to-face
YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
Learn how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.
Adolescence is a time of important change and development. It is also the time when mental health problems can first emerge.
During high school years, mental health problems are among the leading causes of falling grades, problems with friends, and relationships, substance use or abuse and they can have lifelong impact.
That’s where Mental Health First Aid training can help.
With a focus on improved mental health literacy and early intervention, Youth MHFA is for adults who work, live or care for adolescents such as teachers, school support staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers.
