The Lifeline Central West Yamayamarra Accidental Counsellor course equips participants with the essential skills and structure to:
Recognise when a person is in crisis.
Respond in an appropriate and compassionate manner.
Refer the person to a suitable service.

Have you ever found yourself supporting a customer, client, friend, family member, colleague, or even a stranger who is experiencing distress or a crisis, and you aren’t sure what to say? Our Accidental Counsellor workshop equips participants with the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in these situations.

Yamayamarra Accidental Counsellor focuses on giving you the confidence to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experiencing difficult situations or a crisis, by understanding more about their culture and beliefs.

Learning how to ‘Recognise, Respond and Refer’ helps participants build their confidence to support everyone and is particularly relevant for supporting our First Nations peoples in distress or experiencing a crisis. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and education on our First Nations peoples’ culture and history, as well as Mental Health, whilst learning some tips on the following:

How to identify someone in distress.
How to respond to First Nations peoples in crisis through using effective communication skills.
How to ask directly around suicide.
Importance of self-care.

This face-to-face workshop is delivered by Lifeline Trainers. It is open to Indigenous and Non-indigenous peoples. No pre-existing skills or knowledge are required. (age 16+)
