Respond in an appropriate and compassionate manner. Refer the person to a suitable service. Have you ever found yourself supporting a customer, client, friend, family member, colleague or even a stranger who is experiencing distress or a crisis, and you aren’t sure what to say? Our Accidental Counsellor workshop equips participants with the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in these situations. Yamayamarra Accidental Counsellor focuses on giving you the confidence to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experiencing difficult situations or a crisis, by understanding more about their culture and beliefs. Learning how to ‘Recognise, Respond and Refer’ helps participants build their confidence to support everyone and is particularly relevant for supporting our First Nations peoples in distress, or experiencing a crisis. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and education on our First Nations peoples’ culture and history, as well as Mental Health, whilst learning some tips on the following: 1. How to identify someone in distress 2. How to respond to First Nations peoples in crisis through using effective communication skills. 3. How to ask directly around suicide. 4. Importance of self-care. This face-to-face workshop is delivered by Lifeline Trainers. It is open to Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. No pre-existing skills or knowledge are required. (age 16+) This workshop also includes an additional Managing Aggressive Behaviour Workshop. If a client becomes violent or aggressive and is threatening to you, do you know how to respond? This workshop will teach you how to de-escalate clients and how to respond effectively to reduce the occurrence of aggressiveness in your clients. You will also learn how to teach your clients assertive communication skills. If you might have to work with a range of challenging behaviours then this course could be for you! Many situations can be diffused if you have the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond appropriately. This face-to-face workshop is delivered by Lifeline Trainers. It is open to people working or residing within the Nepean Blue Mountains region, for both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. No pre-existing skills or knowledge are required.
